Translating Between Western and Chinese Medicine

The worldviews of Chinese and Western medicine diverged thousands of years ago. The picture below is from Harvard Professor Shigehisa Kuriyama's book, The Expressiveness of the Body and the Divergence of Greek and Chinese Medicine. On the left, the ancient physician Hua Shou emphasizes the channels and points on the body. On the right are Vesalius' drawings, which emphasizes the muscles and physical details. Over time, the East and the West chose to emphasize different aspects of the human being, resulting in the differences in medical theory we encounter today.
